The vegan diet, often characterized as a plant-centered dietary approach, has garnered attention for its potential benefits to human health and the environment. Notably, this dietary choice is recognized for its positive influence on the immune system. A key element contributing to the cardiovascular health benefits associated with vegan diets is the reduction of systemic inflammation. C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute-phase protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation, serves as a crucial biomarker in this context. (Craig, 2009)
Veganism, as an eating pattern, is rooted in the complete avoidance of animal-derived foods, including meat, dairy, and eggs. It is a dietary philosophy that emphasizes the consumption of plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. This dietary choice is diverse, encompassing a wide range of nutrient-dense foods rich in essential components such as vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants (Rees et al., 2021).
These elements play pivotal roles in enhancing cell resilience and immune system functionality, allowing it to operate optimally. The diet's positive associations with various markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction are notable, including lower body mass index (BMI), improved lipid profiles, reduced inflammation, and more favorable blood pressure readings. These favorable outcomes are attributed to the vegan diet's lower intake of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), saturated fat, and processed meat, as well as its higher consumption of fiber and phytonutrients (Koutentakis et al., 2023b). However, it is imperative to acknowledge that vegans may have lower levels of certain nutrients, which should be considered in the context of overall cardiovascular health (Rees et al., 2021).
In addition to these markers, lower body mass index (BMI), decreased total serum cholesterol levels, improved serum glucose levels, and more favorable blood pressure readings are linked to the vegan diet's positive impact on cardiovascular health. This positive influence is attributed to the diet's lower intake of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), saturated fat, and processed meat, coupled with its higher consumption of fiber and phytonutrients (Koutentakis et al., 2023b).
