Assignment Task:

Overview
The victorian power system is mainly managed by AusNet Services, Jemena, and CitiPower & Powercor. Assume that the Victorian government is currently planning to expand the living areas in the western part of Melbourne city (for example the area between Melbourne and Geelong). Let, you have been hired by one of the Victorian power companies. If you are responsible for designing a power system for this area, you would easily be able to do that by using the concepts and facts which will be covered in this unit. But in practice, high voltages in the range of several kilovolts (kV) are used for the operation of a power system. Therefore, it is very difficult to practically validate the designed power system. You can do a design for a high voltage one and then you can scale it down for the practical validation in the lab or vice-versa.

Project Design Activities
You need to design the system for both three-phase and single-phase connections to gain clear understanding. However, you need to analyze each component of the power system before completing the design as a whole project. Most of the project related design problems along with other theoretical design problems will be solved during seminars (for on campus students) or via Blackboard collaborate sessions (for cloud students).
Your understanding on the project design activities and related theories will be assessed both as a team as well as an individual. These assessments are related to the Design Problem Solving Tasks (Assessment 2).
The calculations and results obtained from the design activities needs to be compiled together and submitted for the assessment. The summary of the results need to be included in the final report.
Practical Project Validation
While you will be working on your design, you need to validate the design. The validation will be done in two stages:

Stage 1: Component validation
At this stage, you need to validate all components that you will be using to design your power systems. Please refer to the studio materials which will give you a complete idea about your activities in component validation. The results from the component validations are important as you need to match the results with those you have obtained during the project design. If the results from the component validation do not match with the project design, you need to provide a justification behind this. This needs to be included in your final report.

Stage 2: Whole project validation
At this stage, you need to validate the whole project by connecting all components together in the form of a simple power system. While you will complete the validation, you need to demonstrate your understanding in front of an assessment panel as this part has an assessment which is the practical project validation. Moreover, there is a hurdle on this part and the hurdle is that you need to obtain at least 50% in order to pass the unit.
