World Health Organization: In March 2000, a department for Injuries and Violence Prevention (VIP) was created. For the first time in 50 years, injuries and violence prevention had its place on the WHO structure. The department is located in the Cluster for Non- Communicable Diseases and Mental Health. Injuries and violence prevention is not a new area in WHO. WHO has conducted activities in this area for more than 2 decades. However, the human resources and attention devoted to the topic have increased dramatically. Research Centre for Injury Studies (RCIS): The RCIS is a Research Centre of Flinders University, located in Adelaide, South Australia. Its mission is to contribute to reducing the burden of human injury and adding to the knowledge of its nature, causes, effects and control. To do this, staff of the Centre undertake research, surveillance, analysis, consultation, teaching and disseminate information on injury control and related matters to the public and other practitioners, academics, governments and the community. The largest program of the Research Centre is operating the AIHW National Injury Surveillance Unit which is a collaborating unit of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety – Queensland: This Centre is a joint initiative of the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) and the Queensland University of Technology 9QUT). The purpose of the Centre is to conduct, collaborate and coordinate quality research and teaching programs aimed specifically at identifying and changing community behaviour leading to improved safety on our roads, workplace and communities. Its focus is on identifying, assessing and initiating innovative research leading to the development of strategies that help reduce injury and death. Centre for National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine (CONROD): CONROD was established through a partnership of the Motor Accident and Insurance Commission (MAIC), The University of Queensland (UQ) and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) with the support of the Queensland Government. CONROD’s primary purpose is to advance research into the acute treatment and rehabilitation of people injured in motor vehicle accidents or through other analogous events. This focus links with research initiatives in injury prevention and provides a more comprehensive research focus on the entire spectrum of injury control for the purpose of reducing the incidence and impact of injury
