Assessment 3: Visitor Experience Management Strategy:
Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor
Tourist Site: Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor (UN world heritage site) Purpose:
Your ability to identify visitor experience problems at a site, undertake the necessary contextual research, critically evaluate and design for improved tourist experience and site sustainability are important skills with a number of applications in the professional field. In this assessment your focus is an existing cultural or nature-based tourism attraction and its visitor experience. As part of your skills development you will use the following techniques:
• Peer-to-peer content analysis
• Application of theory of best practice in attraction interpretation methods as part of critical analysis of visitor engagement with the content of the attraction • critical analysis of the online presence of the attraction as a component of marketing, interpretation and preservation
Designing visitor management and experience in cultural and nature-based attractions requires a careful balance between ensuring protection of the asset and enabling visitors to maximise their enjoyment and engagement with what the site has to offer. This task will assist in development of skills in remote tourism resource auditing to improve visitor experience and protect fragile and significant assets through case study of some of the most significant tourism sites in the world - those on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
What you are required to do:
As a team you have been hired to improve visitor management experience at a designated world heritage site. Drawing on your own your own desk top research into the site, lesson readings and content you will design a visitor experience enhancement strategy for a minimum of 3 problems you identify at the site. Your aim is to build quality visitor engagement with the site while protecting it from visitor impacts.
A key aspect of your research will be visitor responses to the site recorded on the social media site TripAdvisor which will serve as your access point to real-life user experience.
Note that while your research may be conducted in teams, your visitor experience audit will be written individually.
Structure:
The strategy should be presented in report format using the following structure: 1.One page Executive Summary (not included in overall word count)
An executive summary contains the major findings and outcomes of the strategy in summary. Remember not to simply describe the site at this point.
2. Site context
Brief summary of the attraction, why the site is world heritage listed, its integrity and authenticity, extent and kind of visitation and relevant tourism features of the locality.
3. Visitor Experience and Management Problem Identification (approx. 1000 words)
3.1 Identify a minimum of 3 key visitor experience/management problems at your site. These problems will be identified through TripAdvisor and given context by your understanding of best practice cultural and nature based management. Write an analysis of why these are critical visitor experience problems for the sustainable conduct of tourism to your site drawing on the materials and discussion occurring across the unit for your explanation.
4. Recommendations
4.1 Make recommendations for improving the vistor management and experience to the site as indicated in the problems identified in part 3 above. Your approach should be guided by academic and industry-relevant theory.
5. Visitor experience design
5. 1 Identify a relevant visitor persona through your research on the site. Explain why this persona is valid for understanding the visitor experience. They need to be indicative of a key visitor type at your site.
5.2 Design and describe a new visitor experience for your persona related to your site. The visitor experience can be consumed before, during or after visitation. Include details such as pricing (if applicable). Explain how this product meets the needs of your persona audience and visitor experience challenges for the site identified in parts 3 and 4 above.
