. Basic Configuration
Students will need to configure each router and switch with basic configurations. These configurations will provide basic security with the passwords cisco placed on the enable command and class placed on the console and vty lines. Hostnames for the switches will start with Floor_ followed by the number of the floor or Backbone. The router will be called MUTC. The configurations that will need to be set are as followed:
• Prevent DNS Lookup for mistyped commands
• Prevent network device from interrupting commands with log information
• Secure the console with a password
• Secure five remote lines with a password
• Secure the Priv Exec Mode
• Encrypt all passwords
• Set the Device Name
• Set the MOTD
• Set the domain-name to mutc.edu
• Create RSA Keys with a strength of 2048
• Create the user ’admin’ at the highest privilege with the encrypted password ’ivytech’
• Enable SSH on the first five vty lines
VLAN Configuration
VLANs allow for networks to be spread over a larger area while still maintaining the same Network ID. This will allow for increased security by compartmentalising communications and maintaining least privilege. To ensure that communication between switches is maintained, all switches will need to be aware of what VLANs are in use, in other words each switch will need to have a VLAN entry in its database of VLANs for all VLANs that it will encounter or the traffic will be dropped. To create the VLAN, you will need to be in global config mode and issue the command: vlan <n> where <n> is the number of the VLAN you want to create. Entering this command will drop you into a vlan config mode where you can run the command: name <vlan_name>. The names for the VLAN should follow a standard naming convention and must not have any white space. The rolls for the VLANs are as followed, discretion of the names themselves is left to the student:
• VLAN 5: Supervisor
• VLAN 6: Human Resources
• VLAN 7: Marketing
• VLAN 8: IT Support
• VLAN 10: First Floor Projects
• VLAN 15: Second Floor Projects
• VLAN 20: Third Floor Projects
• VLAN 99: Native
• VLAN 100: Switch Management
Once all the VLANs that will be used are entered into the switch, the switch will have to be assigned
how to handle the VLAN traffic. This will be done by configuring all interfaces that will be used by the VLANs. The interfaces that will be carrying all VLANs (to and from other switches) will need to have it’s interface set to trunk, this can be done by using the command: switchport mode trunk. And then to increase security the default native VLAN will be changed from VLAN 1 to VLAN 99 by the following command: switchport trunk native vlan <vlan> where <vlan> is the VLAN number you want to change native to.
