Background:

Raw water can be sourced from both surface (i.e. rivers, lakes, streams, ocean, etc.) and subsurface water resources. Raw water is treated at water treatment plants (using physical, chemical and biological treatment processes) to meet the Drinking Water Standards of NZ (DWSNZ). It is very important that DWSNZ are met to ensure the public health & safety. The treated water is supplied to all domestic & commercial areas, which becomes wastewater (WW) after use. The wastewater, which is collected from municipalities and communities must ultimately be returned to receiving waters or to the land or re-used.
The complex question facing the design engineers and public health officials is to what level of WW treatment must be achieved in a given application to ensure the protection of public health and the environment. We also know that wastewater treatment system/method could be consisting of unite operations (i.e. physical forces are used to treat WW) and/or unit processes (i.e. biological and chemical reactions are used to treat WW). Now adays, a combination of unit operations and processes are being used to provide various levels of WW treatment.


Aim of the Assessment:

The aim of this assessment is to learn about water and wastewater treatment systems, solid waste disposal practices, environmental effects of discharging untreated WW, and Maori cultural values in terms of human waste (both liquid & solid).

LO 4: Evaluate wastewater and solid waste treatment and disposal methods.
LO 5: Critically evaluate environmental impact and Maori cultural values in relation to water supply and waste management.


At the completion of this assessment students should be able to:

  • Understand the principles and practices of water treatment.
  • Understand and demonstrate knowledge of wastewater treatment processes – both liquid and solid streams (used in centralised and/or decentralised WW treatment systems).
  • Learn how to find/obtain the required data/information (related to the chosen project topic), collate &
  • analyse it, and put it together as per requirements.
  • Understand the environmental impact of discharging wastewater & disposal of solid waste.
  • Understand the key pieces of legislation that set out principles to be followed in relation to Maori Tangata Whenua considerations on human waste and wastewater systems (i.e. Maori cultural values towards water and waste).
  • Demonstrate professional written and oral communication skills (Note: Oral presentation is only for the investigated WW treatment system part).


 

Part A – Water Treatment Processes

Requirements:

  •  You are required to write a short report on the use of Desalinisation technologies in the world.
  •  Describe the general processes of different types of Desalinisation Plant Technology (i.e. Thermal and Membrane types).
  •  Discuss the possible advantages and disadvantages (using bullet points) of using this technology, and also comment on its feasible use for New Zealand communities.

 

Part B – Wastewater Treatment Processes
Requirements:

1. You are required to select and register a topic related to a wastewater treatment method or system for a specific location via Unitec’s Moodle website (moodle.unitec.ac.nz) within one week of the receipt of this project. A topic selection register has been placed on the Moodle (under the assignment folder) for you to put the details of your topic.

2. Remember, the selected treatment method/system topic could be same but the location (of the selected topic) has to be different.

3. The report can be an assessment and description of an existing working installation as a case study, or can be a state of the art description covering the processes or theory behind a particular method of treatment, its operation, efficiency, merits & demerits, how sustainable is that particular method/system of treatment.

4. Draw key conclusions from your report and include some recommendations for future work.

5. Your report should be between 3000 and 3500 words in length and include diagrams and performance data (i.e. influent & effluent quality data) as appropriate to the method of treatment.

6. A list of alternative wastewater treatment methods/systems is given below. Either you can choose one topic from the following list or you can select your own wastewater treatment topic. But, ensure that you are able to collect the influent (raw wastewater) & effluent (treated wastewater) quality data for your selected WW treatment system (for a specific location).


 

Part C – Solid waste disposal methods

Requirements:
Write a short report (approximately 1000-1500 words maximum) on the disposal of solid waste, which is generated by a small or large community (e.g. a suburb, small town or a city) within or outside New Zealand. In your report comment on:

  •  The origin and sources of the waste in the community
  •  The type of waste generated by the community
  •  Any special problems associated with the handling and disposal of waste in the community
  •  Any health hazards issues
  •  Safe long term disposal methods - State THREE alternative solid waste disposal methods or strategies (other than landfills), in each case referring to the limitations of the particular method.
  •  Uses made of waste materials
  •  Other items/ideas raised in your research
  •  You are also expected to show your understanding of the topic by describing how to manage & minimise the solid waste (generated by the community) in a sustainable way.


 

Part D – Maori cultural view

Requirements:
A general discussion re the following points:

  • Briefly describe the THREE key pieces of legislation that set out principles to be followed in relation to Maori Tangata Whenua considerations on human waste and wastewater systems.
  • Discuss the Maori cultural view of wastewater treatment and disposal. Also discuss if the current effluent & bio-solids disposal practices comply with the Maori cultural views – a general discussion in New Zealand context ?
