Assignment Task
Trends in the Periodic Table
We know that Mendeleev designed the periodic table in a way so that elements with similar properties were grouped together. The periodic recurrence of properties when the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic mass is called:
The Periodic Law
Similar but gradually changing properties in the periodic table are known as trends .
This assignment will have you graphing and observing these trends and then analyzing your results.
The main trends that can be observed in the periodic Table are:
- Atomic radius
- Ionic radius
- Ionization energy
- electron affinity
- electronegativity
The two trends in which we will focus are ATOMIC RADIUS and IONIZATION ENERGY .
Please answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper or on the backside of your graph paper.
ATOMIC RADIUS
- Define atomic
- Plot a line graph with atomic number as the x-axis and atomic radius as the y-axis. Be sure to properly label the graph and create a title.
- Circle all the peaks and identify these elements directly on the graph .
- Circle all the troughs and identify these elements directly on the
- What do these elements have in common?
- Identify the trends in atomic radius as you move across the periodic table from left to right.
- Identify the trends in atomic radius as you move down the periodic
- Provide reasoning for these trends using your understanding of periodic
IONIZATION ENERGY
- Define ionization
- write the ionization energy EQUATIONS for each of the
- write the equations for electron affinity for the

CORRELATIONS
- How the atomic radii and ionization energies are related (i.e when atomic radius increases what happens to the ionization energy?) Describe the correlation that you observe.
- Use your graph to predict the atomic radius of Explain

- When a chlorine atom forms an ion its radius increases, but when a sodium atom forms an ion its radius decreases. Explain this apparent contradiction .
