Overview

This is a part of a set of (graded) discussion topics which are available online. Each of the graded discussions should be participated in to obtain a result for the overall assessment. In each of the discussion topics, you will be asked to give a substantiated opinion with respect to a topic of interest in maintenance. This opinion should be well-positioned with respect to the state of the art and should either be original or substantially engage with the argumentation provided by other contributors in the topic.

Keep in mind the following

  • Use appropriate academic sources and reference them: journal articles, conference articles, technical reports, public databases (e.g. IATA) and trade communications are to be preferred above alternatives.
  • Be sure not to copy / paste your answers from external sources: this would constitute plagiarism. For more information on academic integrity, refer to the prior course announcement.
  • Keep your answer concise and to the point:
    • longer answers do not score higher (in fact, the inverse usually applies).
    • Answers should be addressing the topic at hand. While some degree of lateral thinking is allowed and commendable, straying into unrelated topics is not recommended.

Assessment breakdown

Predictive maintenance focuses on replacing or repairing components or systems based on determination of in-service equipment condition. Given the increase in monitoring capabilities in modern aircraft, the topic of predictive maintenance has become a bit of a ‘buzzword’ within the aircraft maintenance domain. Consider the following related questions and pick one (or more) to give your view on this topic.

  • Would you say that predictive maintenance is another hollow buzzword, or does it have a real future? What benefits do you see in predictive maintenance and why? Which obstacles do you discern towards adoption of predictive maintenance?
  • Can you identify examples of successful predictive maintenance applications in current-day aircraft maintenance and operations? Can you identify which success stories are meaningful beyond their own boundaries – i.e., which successes can be generalized across the industry?
  • How would you define predictive maintenance? Is it sufficient to identify (incipient) failures? Do you also need to be able to diagnose failures? Or does predictive maintenance imply some predictive capability, i.e., being able to estimate remaining useful life of components?
  • What would you use to measure predictive maintenance output? Would you use technically-oriented metrics or business metrics? And which ones would you advocate?
