WINGS-FEATHERS AND FLIGHTS Wings-feathers and flight is about a song a poor woman used to sing in a village that I grew up in. The song was about despair, hope and a dream of a faraway land. She wished that if she could fly like a bird she would fly to a faraway land where there’s milk and honey and could be so much better. She lost her husband and two kids during the south Sudanese civil war in early 90s, her husband was killed in fighting at the war front and both of her children died of hunger. She was deeply saddened by it and went into a deep depression leading to psychosis, she would sit in one spot and sing all day. She ended up killing herself after a period of time. I chose to tell this story because of how it has deeply impacted my life, it’s one of the saddest stories I have ever heard and I do consider being here in Australia a blessed and Australia is one those far away countries she used to sing about. There were no schools’ hospitals or any jobs opportunities where I grew up and I won’t have had the opportunity to go to university had I not come here. I have had a hard life but it’s up to me to turn it around. I don’t want to sit around and feel sorry about myself and the life I’ve lived some are having worse. Life is about turning rags into riches as they say, and it isn’t always about how you start in life, how you finish is what counts. This last collection wings-feathers and flights is about change, new begins, hopes and my dreams taking flights.
