In this assignment, you are asked to prepare a comprehensive report describing a case study to build a complete digital communication network using cellular networks infrastructure,sensor based wireless communication and local area network.Use-case: Consider a scenario of a number of smart farms located at the wide geographicalarea of around 20KM2. You are responsible for designing wireless digital communicationsystems for a variety of smart farming applications in the given geographical area. On averagea single farm can span between 1 to 2 square km. There are at least 4-5 workers within each farm responsible to manage overall operations.
Each farm has multiple sensors installed formonitoring soil quality, water quality and moisture to monitor crops growth. Each farm also has over 200 animals, all of them are tagged with IoT devices sending sensor information for continuously monitoring animal health and welfare. Some of the sensors (e.g. crop monitoring) transmit infrequent observations (only once in an hour), while a few sensors (e.g. animal health & welfare monitoring) need to transmit observations very frequently often more than one observation per second.
There is no existing infrastructure for cellular communication in the region but there is apossibility to connect to PTSN and/or Internet through a wired network if infrastructure isinstalled. Each farm has a small building located in it with a possibility to have a broadband internet connection either through wired network or through cellular broadband once installed.
All sensors within farms have a possibility to communicate through any of the cellular, Wi-Fi,ZigBee or LoRa based communication modules, ideally a single communication method atone time is preferred. Farmers wish to use mobile apps on smart phones for various monitoringservices while Wi-Fi based connectivity could be used for off-loading remote sensors data andtransmitting it over the internet in case of bulk data uploads.
Q1: You are required to design a complete multi type network communication system to connect all devices, sensors and services in the given area.
1. Design a setup for cellular communication to cover the overall area of all farms.
2. Describe the design of the network and your considerations for coverage requirements, number of users, types of devices, amount of traffic offered to the system and potential applications for use over the cellular network (min. 2000 words).
3. Draw a diagram of the cellular network design, coverage and frequency used for\channels.
4. Advocate your design decisions in terms of applications requirements and how you considered traffic load, coverage area, number of channels and cost while designing your cellular network infrastructure (min. 1500 words).
5. Demonstrate what will be GoS for your network.
