Assessment

Introduction

NAT11057003 - Design and implement English as a second language assessment tools looks selecting assessment methods appropriate to English teaching contexts and developing assessment tools to suit the learning environment and outcomes. To design and implement effective assessment tools, assessors must consider the role of assessment in the learning process, as well as the methods, procedures and evidence collection required to properly evaluate a students performance in a fair and reliable manner. This includes informal assessment and formal examinations such national and international English language proficiency tests..

Learning Objectives

  • Research a specific purpose for English based on learner needs
  • Identify the social context of the chosen specific purpose
  • Identify key topics of the chosen specific purpose
  • Identify which texts and linguistic items are appropriate for the chosen specific purpose
  • Apply syllabus design techniques to create a learning program for the chosen specific purpose
  • Monitor and review the learning process

Assessment Method and Description

The assessment is competency based. This means that you will be graded as ‘satisfactory’ or ‘not yet satisfactory’ in individual tasks and 'competent' or 'not yet competent' for a unit. You need to be assessed as ‘satisfactory’ in all of the assessment tasks relating to that unit in order to be deemed ‘competent’ for the unit. If a you are graded ‘not yet satisfactory’ or ‘not yet competent’ you will be given another opportunity for reassessment and will be provided with specific feedback on areas needing improvement. All students have the right to appeal any assessment decision. See your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for more information on appeals.

All assessment tasks will be retained by your RTO. If you wish to keep a copy of the assessment task then make sure to keep a copy for your records.

You must provide clear, concise and reasonable answers / submissions for all of the assessment tasks within a unit. The purpose of the assessment is to see that you:

  • can communicate understanding and knowledge of unit the content
  • can apply knowledge and skills you have learnt
  • can demonstrate that you meet the requirements of the unit (see mapping at the end of this document)

Task 12.1

Answer the following questions regarding the reasons behind ESL assessment.

1. List four reasons for assessing ESL learning.

  • Placement / diagnostic: to find out a learner’s current proficiency and put them in an appropriate class or level.
  • Formative monitoring: to track day-to-day progress and pinpoint skills that still need work while a course is running.
  • Feedback & motivation: to give learners concrete evidence of what they can already do and what’s next, which boosts engagement.
  • Summative certification / accountability: to verify that course outcomes have been met and, if needed, provide an official record for promotion, graduation, or external stakeholders.

2. Describe three ways that assessments can help to structure a learning program.

Task 12.2

Evaluate formative, summative, criterion based and norm referenced tests for their features, similarities and differences.

1. Complete the table adding extra test features to describe each test.

Features of assessment:

  • Used throughout a course or project
  • Low-stakes marks usually do not count heavily toward a final grade
  • Provision of feedback on learners work by peer or teacher
  • Usually diagnostic
  • Conducted frequently (e.g., quick quizzes, exit tickets, observation)
  • Results are used to adjust teaching immediately and target support
  • Encourages learner self-reflection / self-assessment

2. Describe the similarities and differences between norm referenced and criterion referenced assessment. (Maximum 150 words)

Summary of Assessment Requirements

The assessment for NAT11057003 Design and Implement English as a Second Language Assessment Tools requires students to demonstrate their understanding of how ESL assessments are designed, implemented, and evaluated in real learning contexts. This includes selecting appropriate assessment methods, developing tools that align with learning outcomes, and ensuring that assessment practices are fair, reliable, and valid.

Key Requirements & Pointers

The assessment tasks examine whether the student can:

  • Understand the purpose of ESL assessments and explain why assessments are used in different teaching contexts.
  • Distinguish between informal and formal assessment types, including major national and international English proficiency exams.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of learner needs and the social context behind specific-purpose ESL programs.
  • Identify key topics, linguistic items, and texts appropriate for the selected teaching purpose.
  • Apply syllabus design principles to build an appropriate learning program.
  • Monitor and review the learning process effectively.
  • Evaluate major assessment types (formative, summative, criterion-referenced, and norm-referenced), including similarities, differences, functions, and features.
  • Provide clear, concise, and justified responses to all assessment tasks.
  • Meet competency expectations (satisfactory/not yet satisfactory).

The assessment is competency-based, requiring students to demonstrate both knowledge and practical application. Satisfactory performance in all tasks is required to be deemed competent.

How the Academic Mentor Guided the Student

The academic mentor supported the student through a structured, scaffolded process to ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with competency standards.

Step 1: Understanding the Assessment Purpose

The mentor first explained the overall aim of the unit:
To help students learn how ESL assessments are designed, implemented, and aligned with instructional goals.
The mentor reviewed the learning objectives with the student so they understood the skills they were required to demonstrate before beginning Task 12.1 and 12.2.

Step 2: Clarifying ESL Assessment Reasons (Task 12.1)

The mentor encouraged the student to reflect on the fundamental functions of ESL assessment placement, monitoring progress, supporting learner motivation, and verifying competency.
They guided the student to articulate these reasons clearly in short, structured points, ensuring each reason connected logically to ESL teaching practice.

Step 3: Linking Assessment to Learning Program Structure

The mentor helped the student identify how assessment influences curriculum planning, including:

  • Setting learning goals
  • Sequencing instruction
  • Adjusting teaching strategies
They provided examples (e.g., diagnostic tests shaping unit planning) to help the student produce relevant answers.

Step 4: Evaluating Assessment Types (Task 12.2)

The mentor instructed the student to:

  • Break down each assessment type (formative, summative, criterion-referenced, norm-referenced)
  • Add features to the table accurately
  • Focus on clarity and practical examples
  • Stay within the 150-word limit for comparing criterion and norm referencing

The mentor provided a comparative approach to help the student understand how each assessment type functions within ESL teaching.

Step 5: Ensuring Accuracy, Clarity, and Competency

Before finalising the task, the mentor encouraged the student to:

  • Review their responses for completeness and clarity
  • Check alignment with unit requirements
  • Ensure terminology was used correctly
  • Maintain concise explanations appropriate for competency-based assessment

Step 6: Final Alignment With Competency Expectations

The mentor reminded the student that all answers must show:

  • Understanding of ESL assessment theory
  • Ability to apply assessment principles to real teaching situations
  • Knowledge of assessment terminology
  • Clear communication skills

This ensured the submission met RTO standards for “satisfactory” performance.

Final Outcome and Learning Objectives Achieved

By following the mentor-guided process, the student was able to:

  • Provide a clear explanation of why ESL assessments are important.
  • Identify how assessments structure and guide instructional planning.
  • Describe and evaluate formative, summative, criterion-referenced, and norm-referenced assessments with clarity.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between assessment tools and learner needs.
  • Apply knowledge of assessment principles to real ESL teaching contexts.
  • Communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and in a competency-aligned format.

Learning Objectives Covered:

  • Researching and understanding specific English-learning purposes
  • Identifying learner context and needs
  • Recognising linguistic and textual requirements
  • Applying syllabus design and assessment principles
  • Monitoring and reviewing learning
  • Demonstrating competency in ESL assessment theory and practice
