Part 1 Risk Assessment

While planning for an investigation, it is important for the safety of the experimenter and of  others that potential risks are considered. Therefore, before conducting any practical  laboratory work you should conduct a risk assessment. The purpose of the risk assessment  is to identify the risks and control them to keep everyone as safe as possible.

To identify risks, think about the:

• activity that will be carried out.

• equipment or chemicals that will be used.

A risk can have many different causes. Risks can be:

Physical Risk – related to a factor within the environment that can harm the body  with/without touching it. This may include ergonomic hazards, heat and cold, vibration  hazards, and noise hazards.

Part 2 Practical Investigation

Introduction

We often take hot water for granted as it relies on sources of energy such as gas or  electricity to heat the water.

This depth study requires you to investigate how hot water heaters work and to design,  construct and conduct a practical investigation of a working model.

You will analyse data and information from practical testing and use problem-solving  techniques to apply your findings to make improvements to your design in order to build a  better model.

You will communicate your findings in a written experimental report, which must include  photos of your testing and modelling.

Purpose

Design and construct a solar-powered water heater that maximises heating while  minimising size, complexity and costs, keeping the following in mind.

• Whilst it is best to use the sun to test you model, this may not always be possible  due to weather conditions or other factors.

  • Your design can be tested using artificial light or heat sources only if there  is not enough direct sunlight available.
  • You must state this in your experimental report.

• The results of your testing including heating source, change in temperature,  heating time and heat energy transferred will be used to evaluate the success of  your design.
