Why change is needed

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death not only in Australia but also in other developed countries such as the United States, (WHO CVD Risk Chart Working Group, 2019). Andre, et al., (2015), reports that in 2015 the WHO estimated that 14 million people died every year from cardiac arrests. Most of these cases are manageable and can be avoided if the appropriate strategies are put in place. This would involve training healthcare professionals on how to respond to cardiac arrest cases as well as educating patients on how to tell when they are at risk of cardiac arrest. To help manage cardiac arrest management, a care plan known as Targeted Temperature Management (TTM) was developed and is being studied to determine its efficiency in acute care settings. Through the treatment, patients are hoped to have better neurologic outcomes.

The therapy involves cooling to 32-340C patients who have been resuscitated after suffering a cardiac arrest. The patients are cooled for several hours where the low temperatures lower neuronal cell metabolisms and thus decreasing the production of harmful substances in the body that form during the resuscitation process, (Brunner, et al., 2015). A study done in Melbourne, Australia involving 77 participants concluded that patients who received TTM were 49% more likely to survive after resuscitation compared to only 26% survival rate for patients who only received normothermia, (Bernard, et al., 2002).

The high rate of deaths related to cardiovascular diseases, therefore, calls for a change in the way the diseases are handled. If any significant progress against the high rate is to be realised, therapies such as TTM may need to be applied.
