Assignment Task:

Task:

Overview The intention of this unit is to give students a theoretical and practical understanding of the use of shell script to perform more complex tasks, thus equipping them for using the shell to automate common tasks on modern operating systems (Windows includes proper shell support these days). Materials You will require use of your own laptop or other BYOD device, that is capable of running a Virtual Machine instance of Ubuntu 20.04. You will use the Virtual Machines you setup in Unit 0. Significant typing will be required, so laptop or netbook is strongly recommended as compared to a tablet or other such device. Estimated Time Required It is estimated that 17 hours of effort will be required to obtain a “Credit” result for this unit. The justification of effort is as follows: This unit constitutes 28% of the practical component of this topic, which in turn constitutes 45% of the total topic. Thus this unit is 12.6% of the total topic. Obtaining a credit grade for a 4.5 Unit topic is expected to require 135 hours of study, and 12.6% of that is approximately 17 hours. One possible break-down of this time is as follows: 1 hour – Attending the lecture. 1 hours – Reading recommended reading materials in preparation for Practical/Workshop. 3 hours – Practical/Workshop session. 12 hours – Activity following the practical workshop session to complete your submission.

Learning Outcomes

1. Create scripts and programs for Unix and Windows systems to automate everyday tasks Preparation

1. Search for “bash tutorial” or similar keywords to begin discovering the capabilities of the shell, and how it can be used. You may alternatively use ash, dash, tcsh or csh as an alternative shell. But no other shells are acceptable.

Body of work 1. Each student is required to individually write a text adventure game, using shell script as the programming language. This can be written using any of the following shells (or combination of them): bash, ash, dash, tcsh or csh. No other shells are acceptable. Nor is PERL or any other fancier “shell like” language.

NOTE: I will run your submissions in an instance of the mlterm terminal. You should install this on your VM and use it when testing your game, to make sure that it works correctly in that terminal.
