Step1 Start with a very basic understanding of Bronfenbrenner - as described in the weekly material, the PPT and the recordings from the last couple of weeks. (Note: Module 1, Topic 3 clearly focuses on explaining this systems theory and how it relates to the Assignment tasks). Don't get any more complicated than that. Start with getting your head around the 4 basic systems that have been briefly looked at in this unit 1) self 2) microsystem 3) exosystem 4) macrosystem The Morgan (1986), Burgmann (1996) and Cooper (1995) readings will also help you understand how social issues and organisations are complex sites, made up of different locales of power, linked to different ideologies. This is important information and will help you imagine how you may break your social issues into the 4 various systems, after you have finished Step 3. They will also be very useful readings to reference throughout the early stages of the essay. Step 3 With an understanding of the systems theory, choose one of the social issuesoffered to do some research on: 1) Income inequality 2) Climate change The purpose of the research is to gain a broad overview of some of the key components of your chosen issue. As you take your time, read through reports, articles, links etc., and start to imagine how it might be broken into the 4 systems. Perhaps you could simply draw the four systems as circles and write ideas about how you could break this issue into parts that might fit into different systems (circles). Once you have done this - sit back and think what you might like to achieve (what changes you want to see happen) - some short-term goals and some ultimate goals. By doing this you should start to see which of the systems (circles) you might need to focus your energy / strategies to achieve these goals. Step 4 Now turn your attention to learning about each of the 3 strategies you are given to choose from: 1) Lobbying 2) Ethical non-violence 3) Trade unionism and professionalisation Refer to the weekly material for each strategy – complete the academic readings (these are great sources of references when writing your essay) - keep in mind your short term and ultimate goals. As you are exploring each strategy, reflect on which one would seem to be most useful (effective) in helping you successfully achieve some of the short-term and ultimate goals, and why. Consider if there might be some obstacles to overcome when using them. Consider also which of these strategies might be the most ineffective and why. If you do all this, slowly and step by step - you will have everything you need to complete the essay.
