Aim:
~ 2 sentences explaining what the aim of the experiment was. Provide some detail and context for the experiment.
The aim needs to be written in your own words (do not copy the aim directly – paraphrase as appropriate). Do not use ‘I’ or ‘we’ statements, keep the tense impersonal.

The method is not to be written out in full (as students worked through the steps), just include a reference to the procedure guide e.g. The method was completed as per the procedure guide (Fudge 2021, pp. ## - ##) and then add in a reference list with the complete reference to the procedure at the end.
Only note if anything was done differently to the method in the procedure guide i.e. 10 drops added not 2 etc.

Observations:
You need 6-8 expected observations in the observations section (as dot points).
Use things you see in the videos or your imagination of what you'd expect to see/smell/hear/notice/anything unusual that happened or something that might be good to notice/observe that could interfere with the final results.

Add a table or notes of your raw data, e.g. the data/information/values/pictures/sketches/images of the results that you obtained and wrote down or drew from the practical. Present them clearly labelling any figures/tables with a clear and useful title and number i.e. Figure 1: Blah. Refer to any images or figures in your discussion.
Use your own data from the experiment you choose (if you completed in person as internal students). External students can use either of the sample data sets provided (or your result if you attend a lab in-person).
Calculations:

  • Either write your calculations neatly on a piece of paper, take a photo and attach to (or within) your submission OR type up your calculations into Word.
  • Remember to include all equations, correct units i.e. ml, and think about significant figures/appropriate decimal places in your calculated values and answers. Show all working out and include the equations that were used.
  • Results and Calculations together are worth 24%

Discussion:
The discussion section needs to be (at a minimum) a decent set of 3-4 paragraphs ~500-800 words discussing your results/calculations/the experiment and including the numerical results obtained from the calculations, if there are any. Explain your results from the experiment and analyse what those results show or mean referring to the aim(s) as needed. Use the procedure introduction notes to also help understand the practical.
Also think about errors that could occur and where the experiment could be improved upon in your discussion.

The conclusion needs to include your numerical results and summarise your results obtained, whether the aim was achieved, and if there is a reason why the results may not be as expected. Again, do not use ‘I’ or ‘we’ in the writing style.

Questions:

  • Include the questions at the end of your report (found in the procedure guide). Only answer the questions relating to the practical that you have written about i.e. if you write up the pipetting practical you only need to answer the specific pipetting questions in the procedure guide.
  • Can be dot points. Must still be paraphrased as needed.
  • Include references, if you use websites, the lecture notes, procedure notes, the videos etc. to help answer the questions. These don’t need to be completely academic sources though. See some videos online under tabs.
  • Worth 10%

Participation:

  • How you conducted yourself during the practical(s) (including following instructions, working safely in a lab environment etc.). This means if you attended the lab in person that your overall participation would have been noted. External students can include working through the online lab simulations (x2). If you were unable to attend this will not affect participation as there is an added participation component for 2021 for external students to complete. See below.
  • This includes marks for your locker check/clean-up and general lab tidiness when leaving
  • Preparation completed prior to the experiment(s) (e.g. watching of pre-lab videos/reading over lab procedure)
  • For 2021 external students will also be required to complete a short 50-100 words reflection on their online lab experience. How did you find the online working through experiments, did the videos and/or additional simulations help, how did you feel working through sample data and thinking about a discussion from video and procedures? Please provide a few reflective sentences about the practical experiences online and how you felt you went with the submitted assessment. In this part only you can use personal tense for your reflection.
  • Worth 8%

Things to keep in mind:

  • Refer to the chemistry procedure guide notes for comprehensive information pp.42-49. There is also a helpful reading under the week 12 tab: practical write-up general information to read.
  • The report layout and appearance is worth 10%, see the feedback form (marking scheme) for details on what to include.
  • If you write up the chromatography practical, don't forget to write up both sections; TLC and column chromatography.
  • These can be combined into one report or split into 2 reports in the same file. If you split it, then you only need ~4 observations and ~2 paragraphs of discussion for each section.
  • There is no specific word count as each practical has different expectations. Some have more calculations and others might have other visuals or graphs and different sections of data and therefore words, but usually a good assignment could be anywhere between 800-1500 words, depending on whether you add in typed calculations or a picture of handwritten calculations. The word limit is not taken into the marking; unless it is too long winded or too short without enough information in the discussion.
