INSTRUCTIONS
Below, find step by step actions for completing this assessment:
Form groups of 3 – 4 students. Allocate yourselves on the shared editable document shared with you by your lecturer. You must be in a group with other members of your class. Part-time students should group together in the allocated rows. All students must be allocated by Friday of week 1.
Discuss as a group – what are your strengths? How will you be able to contribute? Does anyone have lots of ECE experience? Is anyone amazing at writing and referencing? Does anyone have other work experience that will be helpful? Delegate tasks, set deadlines for yourselves, decide how/when you will communicate.
As a group, discuss the ‘contemporary issues’ in ECE that you are most interested in exploring, or the issues we have explored in the unit. Decide on a contemporary issue you will discuss. Get one group member to post the issue on their lecturer’s discussion board by 5pm Wednesday. Your lecturer will check it is appropriate.
Come up with a hypothetical scenario where the issue is at play. Approx 200 words.
For example…
Issue: Gender identity and expression (up to 100 words to outline the issue and its relevance to ECE)
Hypothetical scenario: Tom is 4. He loves dressing up in tutus and fairy wings at kinder. His parents have asked the educators to stop allowing him to do this. You will then include some more information about Tom, the educators, the parents and their background, possibly the other children or staff in the centre. Tell a story…
5. With your group, have a conversation about the scenario and the issue, each student taking up a different perspective (eg. child, parent, educator, other children… other stakeholders in the child’s education)

5. Write up your conversation in appropriate academic style, with headings for each perspective
Outline the different perspectives of the people involved, each group member can write their section under the heading (eg. The child’s perspective, The parents’/caregivers’ perspective, The educator's perspective etc). (approx. 300 words per section). Make sure you reference the unit readings in each section. For example, when considering the issue from the perspective of the child you might connect to a post humanist perspective, for example. Or you may discuss power/knowledge and Foucault when discussing the educator’s perspective.
6. Considering the different perspectives, what are the implications for practice? What do you think is the best way to address this issue? What is the most ethical way to act? Draw on the VIT Codes of Ethics and Conduct, Code of Ethics and Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to support your ideas (approx. 300 words for the whole section)
7. Edit and proofread your submission. Make sure it is referenced correctly. Make sure it is in all the same font and formatting.
8. Submit your case study in one document to the assessment task 2 DropBox
