Your task: The sport of dodgeball is trying to become an Olympic sport. To be considered, however, a sport must be able to prove high levels of participation around the world.  Australia has an excellent world ranking in international competitive dodgeball, but would like to improve its participation numbers at the grassroots level. You have been hired by the Australian Dodgeball Federationto script a brief video that can be used to encourage more people to take part in recreational competitive dodgeball. It is up to you how you structure the video, but it must be clearly a product of the Australian Dodgeball Federation, and feature a presenter who will speaking in parts of it. The video is not an advertisement, but it is an informational piece designed to promote participation. It will go on their website, You Tube channel and other social media platforms. You will need to cover the following key messages (in no particular order):
    • Australia has had competitive success in dodgeball.
    • The sport has many participants in Australia
    • The basic rules are easy.
    • It is fun, good for you and safe.
    • There are opportunities to play at higher competitive levels.
    • There are ways to join teams/leagues in most states.
    • Contact details.
You will write your script by filling out the script template attached below.  Your word count will only include the words in the audio column of the template. Please ensure:
    • The piece is appropriate for official marketing purposes.
    • The writing is engaging, informative and suitable for an audiovisual medium.
    • It is written in the script template provided on the LMS and entered correctly as shown in classes.
    • The word count (the actual word count, not the prescribed one) is added in brackets following the last word of the piece like so (wc: 489). Visual cues and camera instructions don’t count towards the word count.
    • Clear, concise and correct writing that adheres to the style and grammar rules taught so far.

Writing Opinion

  • Tutorial 
Your task: Write a 500-word opinion piece on a topic of your choosing for Upstart, the La Trobe journalism student online platform. You are to devise and pitch an idea to your tutor. It can be either a video script or article format. Consider a subject you are already well-informed about or can research easily, and that is relevant to the Upstart audience. It must include attributions to at least three sources (quotes, research findings, surveys, data etc.) to support your argument. Use hyperlinks to the source.  For your pitch, you will write answers to the questions below and show your tutor. You will then write the article underneath once they have approved.
      • What is your argument? (This should be written as a clear one-sentence thesis statement. Eg. "The AFL needs to do more to protect players from racism." or "female students should have the right to wear shorts or pants as part of their school uniform.")
      • Why is the issue relevant now?
      • Who is your audience and why does your particular audience care about this?
These answers should appear at the top of your piece when you hand in the final draft (but they do not contribute to word count). Things we expect:
    • You must be writing on an approved topic (approval obtained before the end of Week 10).
    • The answers to your pitch questions should be at the top of the piece on submission. They are not included in the word count.
    • Use at least three sources of information and hyperlink to the original source.
    • It should not contain any fancy borders, fonts or logos, and is all written in 11 or 12 point font.  
    • Write a headline for your piece.
    • It should include a clear, concise argument written on a topic, written in a style suitable for your audience.
    • It should incorporate research material and supporting quotes to bolster your argument, which are attributed correctly for media writing (attribution and hyperlinks)
    • There should be a clear logic to the structure of your piece.
    • It should use short, concise paragraphs in the style used in Upstart (no more than 4-5 lines)

Writing for Sound -

Tutorial Brief Your task: You will write the script for a brief segment for a podcast called Tell me something I don’t know which looks at ordinary, everyday things, and attempts to find fascinating stories about them. Your segment is called 'The Don't Bore Me Challenge'. Each week this segment focuses on a mundane, everyday object. The challenge is to present something interesting and entertaining about that object (or closely related to it) that the other presenters have never heard before.  You are the show's researcher and writer, and it is your job to write the segment that will be presented in the podcast.  This means someone else will be reading your script. The story you write should be based on REAL research. It should be conversational in tone, attribute sources, and be clearly expressed so that it can be read aloud on air. The copy should be clean, correct and free of any issues that will trip up the reader. Your segment topic: Everyone will draw the topic from the hat at the start of their tutorial.  Please note: if you were absent, please email your tutor or the lecturer to be assigned one by the end of Week 12. If you do not get a topic by 5 pm on the final Friday of Week 12, you are not able to complete the task.  Things we expect you to do:
