As part of this project, students must submit two reports. One in Week 7 and the other in Week 13. See the marking criteria. Feedback from first report must be used to prepare the second report. The report must be prepared as a professional engineering report with an abstract, introduction, data collection and analysis and conclusions. The report must include headings and appropriate levels of sub-headings. It must also include table of content, list of abbreviations, figures and tables. All the literature data must be appropriately referenced. Harvard style referencing must be used. Including both the reports, students are expected to produce about 5,000 word length reports (excluding title page, table of content, list of abbreviations, figures and tables, and references).

Students must select a 10 ha (315 m x 315 m) area of a developed urban land. It could be in any of the urban areas within Australia. Use Google Maps/Earth to select the area. Use measure distance option to mark the area.Google map must be included in the report. Also, include the coordinates of the four edges/ corners. For the selected area, obtain the terrain layout. This can be done by left clicking the Menu button and then selecting the Terrain. Terrain layout can be used to work out the drainage lines of your selected urban land. Use the drainage lines to divide the area into sub-catchments, if necessary. 

For the selected area, carryout the following data collection and analysis: 

– Identify and count the number of residential and commercial properties.

– Develop a typical residential house design which satisfies BASIX (include BASIX certificate in one of the appendices of your report)

– Use GAbi to estimate the embodied energy for typical residential and commercial properties.

– Estimate the operational energy required for both residential and commercial properties.

– Estimate the overall energy required to sustain the urban centre over a period of 50 years.

– Use MUSIC to estimate the total runoff that is generated from the area.Rainfall data for the MUSIC must be obtained from the nearest rainfall station. Rainfall data for the station can be obtained from the BoM website.

– Identify WSUD technologies that can be adopted for the urban area that is chosen.

– Develop a water balance for the urban area (including the inflow and outflow of water into the urban centre).

– Provide a succinct summary of all the data that was collected and analysed.

– Develop a thought-provoking conclusions and recommendations section.
