Assignment Task

Context

In the Common Module – Reading to Write, students develop the knowledge and skills to appreciate, understand, analyse, and evaluate complex texts. Students have studied and reflected on a variety of texts that explore the experiences and perspectives of writers. Links between these texts are explored in relation to genre, theme, and point of view. Students have undertaken a range of writing activities throughout the unit to assist in preparing for this task.

Task Description

Part 1 - Sustained Response

Explore a current issue affecting young people. Analyse various viewpoints, supporting them with robust evidence and compelling arguments. Discuss how this issue impacts individuals, society, and the future.

Choose from ONE of the following options:

i. The Impact of Social Media on Youth

ii. Are Schools crafting futures or confining possibilities?

iii. Navigating the AI Dilemma on balancing innovation and digital privacy for today’s youth.

In your sustained discursive response, you will be assessed on how well you:

• Develop a clear and well-structured argument.
• Use relevant and reliable sources to support your argument.
• Demonstrate an understanding of multiple perspectives on the issue.
• Provide a deep analysis of the issue through critical thinking.
• Use creativity and originality in your approach and examples.
• Demonstrate strong writing skills and mechanics.

Part 2 - Reflection

For the second component of this task, you are required to write a word reflection on the process of composition. In your reflection, you should:

1. Identify and justify the choices you made in your discursive piece. Example: "I chose to structure my argument in a deductive format because I wanted to create a sense of suspense and build up to my main point."

2. Identify and explain one source of inspiration for your discursive piece, which must be another discursive published online. Identify the author and the title of the piece and explain how you adapted the writing style of that particular piece into your own discursive. Example: "My source of inspiration was an article by Jane Doe titled 'The Importance of Sleep.' I admired the way she used personal anecdotes to support her argument, so I incorporated a similar approach in my own discursive."

3. Think evaluatively about your own writing and reflect on what you could have done better. This could include reflecting on your use of evidence, the clarity of your argument, or your writing style. Example: "In retrospect, I should have included more counterarguments to strengthen my argument and demonstrate my understanding of multiple perspectives on the issue."

4. Clarify how you benefited from the feedback process. Provide two examples of how you edited your piece in light of feedback received. Example: "One piece of feedback I received was that I needed to strengthen the connections between my arguments and use more transitional phrases to guide the reader. Hence, I included more signposting language and better connected my ideas. Another piece of feedback I received was that I should consider alternative perspectives on the issue and use them to strengthen my own argument. In response, I researched and incorporated additional sources that presented counterarguments and addressed them in my piece."

In your reflection, you will be assessed on how well you:

• Identify and justify the choices made in your sustained response.
• Identify and explain one source of inspiration and how it was adapted.
• Think evaluatively about your own writing and reflect on areas of improvement.
