Task Description Through this unit, you will develop knowledge and skills in developing research questions and hypotheses, collecting, handling, analysing, interpreting and presenting data for the sciences, business or technology industries. You will use this knowledge and skill, along with some further research to complete the following tasks:

• You will be provided with a dataset with supplementary background information, related to your industry or discipline.

• You will formulate a research question and/or hypothesis that you can answer using the dataset and techniques learned during this unit.

• You will then use Excel to generate the evidence (descriptive & inferential statistics) towards answering the research question or supporting your hypothesis/hypotheses. Based on these activities, you will write and submit a report that:

• provides details of the research question and hypothesis (or hypotheses) you propose for the data set, including rational or relevant background information

• provides details of the statistical and analytical approaches used, including a justification as to why they were used (i.e. explain why you think the analyses are the most appropriate for your data set and the questions you are trying to answer)

• presents and explains the results of the analyses including at least two visual representations of the data (i.e. plots, charts and/or tables)

• interprets the results (explain what the results are actually showing)

• explanation and discussion of what the results mean in terms of the research question and whether the results support the hypothesis (or hypotheses) you proposed. For example, discuss the relevance and implications of your findings. Are there implications for the industry or business that your data set and research question were based on? Did you identify any limitations of the data set you were provided with? Can you identify further research or data collection that might be needed to address your research question more fully? Have you identified other research questions that are relevant to the data you worked on in this assessment task?

• Include at least 4 reputable references to provide context or support your findings (e.g. refereed journal articles, textbooks from UTAS library site).
